    INTERNATIONAL HUNTING ADVENTURE | SLOVAKIA

Red Stag Hunting in Slovakia: A European Adventure I’ll Never Forget

I traveled to Central Europe for a trophy red stag and returned home with a much bigger story. From the roar of rutting stags to centuries-old hunting ceremonies, this was an experience unlike any big-game hunt I’d ever taken.

The roar echoed across the forested ravine as I settled behind my rifle and searched the opposite ridge. Somewhere in the timber, a mature red stag was announcing his presence, and my Slovakian hunting guide, Oliver, believed we were about to get our opportunity.

I had spent a lifetime hunting North American deer and elk, but nothing quite prepared me for pursuing a rutting red stag in the forests of Central Europe.

When I booked my trip through Heming Hunting, I expected a memorable big-game hunt. What I hadn’t anticipated was how much I would enjoy everything surrounding it: centuries-old hunting traditions, historic European cities, a restored castle for our hunting lodge, and a vacation my wife enjoyed just as much as I did.

My hunting partner and I traveled with our wives, combining a serious red stag hunt with time in Vienna, Bratislava, and the Slovakian countryside. Here’s what the hunt was really like, what it cost, and what I’d tell a North American hunter considering the trip.

The Red Stag Hunt: Listening for the Roar

One of the biggest misconceptions about hunting in Central Europe is that every hunt takes place behind a fence or from a comfortable lodge overlooking a feeder. My experience was nothing like that.

Our hunt took place in vast, densely wooded, publicly managed forest lands that reminded me of the Adirondacks and the northern Appalachian forests of the eastern United States.

Instead of covering miles of exposed mountain ridges, we stalked through thick timber, glassed openings, and listened for stags roaring across forested valleys.

My guide, Oliver, was a perfect match for the hunt. When not guiding for Heming Hunting, Oliver works for the forest service in Slovakia. His understanding of the terrain, deer populations, and animal behavior was invaluable.

Oliver explained how listening to the roar of a stag could help distinguish younger animals from mature trophies. On one occasion, he even explained that a call I thought came from a stag was actually a female red deer vocalizing a warning or distress call.

WATCH THE HUNT: RED STAG HUNTING IN SLOVAKIA

Join us in the Slovakian woods for the sights, sounds, and anticipation of pursuing a rutting red stag.

My hunt unfolded during an evening outing. Oliver and I spent roughly an hour stalking through the forest and climbing a ridge before settling into a lookout overlooking a ravine.

Several stags were roaring around us. Oliver listened carefully to distinguish the mature animal we wanted from the younger stags. He believed our target would eventually appear on the ridge across the ravine.

After about an hour of watching and listening, I finally picked up a mature stag in my scope. He was raking the ground, thrashing brush, and roaring.

I took him with a 175-yard shot using a rented Blaser R8 bolt-action rifle chambered in 8×68S, a powerful European cartridge often compared with the .300 Winchester Magnum.

The experience rewarded patience, observation, woodsmanship, and the expertise of a guide who understood the forest. It was a different challenge from Western elk hunting, but every bit as rewarding.

The Ceremony: More Than the Moment of the Shot

One of the most meaningful differences between my Slovakian hunt and my experiences in North America came after the stag was harvested.

Oliver introduced me to a centuries-old tradition honoring the animal. He broke three branches from a nearby tree. The first was placed in the stag’s mouth as the “Last Bite.” The second was laid over the bullet wound. The third was touched with the animal’s blood and presented to me as a sign of respect for the animal and the hunt.

We then positioned the stag for a photograph and observed a quiet moment of reflection.

The formal ceremony brought together hunters, guides, and other participants. The harvested stag was laid on a bed of evergreen branches, and traditional hunting horns sounded. Everyone stood quietly with their hats removed.

The ceremony was not simply about celebrating the harvest. It acknowledged the animal, the hunting traditions of the region, and the responsibilities of hunters.

For me, these traditions were among the most memorable parts of the entire adventure. They reminded me that hunting means much more than pulling the trigger.

How Much Does a European Red Stag Hunt Cost?

One of the biggest surprises was how approachable the price of a guided red stag hunt in Slovakia could be compared with certain North American big-game hunting packages.

Heming Hunting’s 2026 brochure lists a red stag hunting package at $7,500, covering four guided hunting days and a mature medal-class trophy, subject to the package terms.

A Red Stag Hunting Trip Becomes a European Vacation

For a North American hunter like me, Europe was not the first destination I considered for a serious big-game hunt.

What I discovered was that combining a hunt with a European vacation offered an entirely different experience, especially for couples.

Convincing my wife that another elk hunt in the Rocky Mountains would make a romantic getaway might have taken some creativity. Suggesting a week in Central Europe was a much easier sell. When I told her about our plans, she was more excited than I was.

Vienna: A Different Kind of Field Trip

Our journey began with several days in Vienna. We explored historic museums, palaces, gardens, and some of Europe’s most magnificent architecture.

One highlight was attending the famous Lipizzaner stallion performance. Watching the horses and appreciating the training traditions behind their performances was unforgettable.

I also attended a Mozart concert at the Vienna Opera House. I have to admit that attending an opera was not on my original list of things to do on a big-game hunting trip, but it turned out to be a remarkable experience.

We explored Belvedere Palace and spent time touring Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens. The elegant halls, artwork, and historic architecture gave us a glimpse into Austria’s imperial history.

Our evenings were equally enjoyable, with outstanding dining and prices that were surprisingly reasonable.

    Bratislava and the Slovakian Countryside

From Vienna, we traveled overland into Slovakia, stopping in Bratislava, the country’s capital.

We explored Bratislava Castle, overlooking the city and the Danube River, and visited the Slavín Memorial, the burial ground of thousands of Soviet soldiers who died during World War II fighting in the region.

As we moved into the countryside, the wooded hills and dense forests reminded me of the Adirondacks and the hills of West Virginia.

One particularly memorable stop was a small-town fall festival. We watched traditional dancing, browsed local crafts, and enjoyed the atmosphere. My wife purchased a handmade lace scarf after watching the craftsperson make it in front of us.

These stops gave us a deeper appreciation of the region beyond the hunting opportunities.

Hotel Galicia Nueva: A Castle Instead of a Tent

Our accommodations were nothing like a traditional Western hunting camp.

Heming Hunting arranged our stay at Hotel Galicia Nueva in Halič, Slovakia, a beautifully restored historic castle that reopened as a hotel in 2016.

    Hotel Galicia Nueva in Slovakia
Hotel Galicia Nueva our home for eight days

The hotel combined historic European charm with outstanding accommodations, dining, and modern amenities.

We enjoyed meals in beautifully decorated rooms, relaxed at the Nicolaus wine cellar, and visited the hotel’s café and rooftop bar.

While we hunted, our wives enjoyed the wellness center, including its pool, saunas, whirlpool, and spa treatments. Returning to the hotel each evening added an entirely different dimension to the trip.

European Hunting Accommodations – Luxury Lodging and Exceptional Dining

One of the pleasant surprises of a European hunting vacation is the exceptional quality of the accommodations and dining experiences available to traveling hunters. From elegant five-star hotels to historic castles and traditional European lodges, hunters can enjoy outstanding comfort after a day pursuing red stag. Fine dining, regional cuisine, and warm hospitality add another dimension to the adventure. These photographs showcase the accommodations, memorable meals, and amenities that make a European hunting trip with Heming Hunting appealing to both hunters and non-hunting companions.

A Different Way to Think About a Trophy Red Stag

North American trophy hunters are accustomed to scoring animals by antler measurements, using systems such as Boone and Crockett or Pope and Young.

European hunting culture approaches trophy evaluation somewhat differently. During our trip, I learned about the CIC system, which considers physical measurements and other characteristics of red stag trophies under species-specific rules.

    Understanding European Trophy Evaluation

    • Antler weight and length
    • Circumference and other measurements
    • Number of points
    • Pearling and coloration
    • Overall trophy characteristics
    • Bronze, Silver, and Gold medal classifications

European hunters certainly appreciate exceptional antlers, but I found that age, character, and the management history of an animal often played important roles in discussions about a trophy.

We considered our two stags to be in the upper Bronze to Silver range based on the evaluations discussed during the trip. Official medal classifications should be confirmed through the applicable scoring process.

I was also impressed by the variety of wildlife in the region, including red deer, roe deer, fallow deer, and wild boar.

One Last Excursion: Discovering More of Slovakia

We were fortunate to harvest both stags within three days, leaving additional time to explore.

Heming arranged an excursion to Rodinné vinárstvo Ďurík, a family-owned winery established in 1995. Jana Ďuríková and her son Matúš provided a private tour and an enjoyable tasting that included regional foods and duck raised on the farm.

Having experience with orchard and winery management, I especially appreciated the opportunity to learn about the family’s vineyard operations.

We also explored Kremnica, a historic mining town known for its medieval architecture and centuries-old minting tradition.

A local historian guided us through the town, explaining its history and landmarks, including the Town Castle and Saint Catherine Church.

Our final lunch in Kremnica was a perfect way to wrap up the adventure. Several of us ordered enormous traditional pork knuckles, and we shared stories of the trip with our friends from Heming Hunting, Roman and Adam.

European Hunting Trip Excursions – Beyond the Hunt

A European hunting trip offers much more than exceptional red stag hunting. From historic castles and charming villages to breathtaking landscapes and centuries-old traditions, Europe provides an unforgettable combination of hunting, sightseeing, and cultural experiences. Our adventure with Heming Hunting included opportunities to experience the region’s rich history, architecture, and local attractions. These photographs highlight why a European hunting vacation is an excellent choice for hunters and their traveling companions who want to combine world-class hunting with memorable excursions.

Planning a European Red Stag Hunt: What American Hunters Should Know

Before traveling to Slovakia, I had plenty of questions. How complicated would the international travel be? Should I bring my own rifle? What about hunting permits, trophy importation, and transportation?

What I discovered was that traveling to Central Europe for a hunting adventure was much more manageable than I had expected.

Heming Hunting helped coordinate our flights, accommodations, transportation, and guided hunt while also arranging activities for our wives.

    European Hunting Trip Planning Checklist

    • Confirm whether the specific hunting area is unfenced or enclosed.
    • Request a complete written breakdown of package costs.
    • Clarify trophy size limits and additional trophy fees.
    • Confirm lodging, meals, airport transfers, and guiding arrangements.
    • Ask about hiking distances, terrain, and expected shot distances.
    • Determine whether to rent a rifle or bring your own.
    • Verify firearms, travel, and trophy-import requirements.
    • Discuss additional species and their associated costs.
    • Arrange sightseeing opportunities for non-hunting companions.

For additional preparation, see our essential hunting gear checklist for deer and elk adventures.

Field-Tested Gear: What Worked in Slovakia

King’s Camo XKG: Just Right for the Red Stag Hunt

With temperatures ranging from approximately 40–65°F, our red stag hunt required clothing that provided warmth during cool mornings without becoming uncomfortable while walking and stalking.

We wore King’s Camo XKG clothing, including the Flux Hoodie, XKG pants, Covert half-zip Hoodie with its built-in facemask, and Performance Hoodie.

Kings Camo XKG gear was used by both hunters

We wore a combination of camouflage and solid tan and green, colors commonly associated with traditional European hunting attire.

The lighter layers helped manage moisture when we were active, while the warmer hoodies proved useful during cooler mornings and extended periods of observation.

    Field-Tested Takeaway

The XKG combination delivered the balance I wanted: warmth when needed, freedom of movement while stalking, and moisture management without excessive bulk.

Should I Bring My Own Rifle?

One decision I considered carefully was whether to bring my personal rifle overseas or rent one through the outfitter.

Traveling internationally with a firearm is possible, but it requires advance planning and coordination with the relevant authorities, airlines, and outfitter.

I chose to rent a Blaser R8 chambered in 8×68S through Heming Hunting. It was an excellent rifle, well suited to the hunt, and renting made the travel arrangements much easier.

Final Verdict: Would I Book Another Hunt with Heming Hunting?

    Absolutely.

I traveled to Slovakia expecting a memorable red stag hunt. I returned with a deeper appreciation for European hunting traditions, wildlife management, and the chance to combine a serious big-game adventure with a vacation my wife enjoyed just as much as I did.

The hunting was challenging and rewarding. The ceremony honoring the harvested stags was unlike anything I had experienced in North America. The historic towns, outstanding food, beautiful countryside, and castle accommodations made the journey even more memorable.

Heming Hunting is a full-service travel agency and outfitter. They coordinated our guided hunt, flights, accommodations, transportation, meals, and sightseeing opportunities. Having one company manage these arrangements allowed us to focus on enjoying the experience.

My wife and I are already discussing another European adventure, and I plan on returning with Heming Hunting.
