When I opened my computer and saw the email from the Wyoming Department of Game and Fish, I was hesitant to open it at first. I have been applying for my mule deer tag for years for a coveted area and hoped this would be the year I finally drew my tag. As fate would have it, the email read; “Hunt Application: Successful,” and I was elated. Mule deer is without a doubt my favorite North American big game animal. Living in South Carolina, my opportunities to pursue the animal are few and far between. As soon as I got…
Rusty Scott, of Aiken, South Carolina, was all set for opening weekend of deer season. Stands hung and safety harness on, he ascended his stand just before first light. As he stepped into the lock-on stand, his life changed drastically. The cable supports for his stand broke before he could secure his safety harness to the tree, and he fell 18 feet. When he hit the ground, he felt pain immediately, he says, and he knew he was in trouble. While falling, he says was thinking, “roll to your back,” but the fall happened fast. He landed on his buttocks,…
It was opening day here in South Carolina. Sweat was rolling down my back. The temperature was pushing triple digits with 80% humidity. As the velvet buck showed himself, I was ready. Knight’s idea was to improve the ignition system to generate a more consistent ignition. To accomplish this, he completely redesigned the ignition system, moving it from a sidelock (where the spark would have to travel a distance while turning 90 degrees in the process) to a straight (or inline) ignition system. In doing so, the modern muzzleloading era began. Since that time, more and more designers, engineers, and gunsmiths have tinkered with…
It’s Essential for a Successful Out-of-State Hunt Every spring I wait anxiously to see if I draw that coveted tag I’ve been applying for in the far-away West. The spring when that letter finally arrived, I tore into it and saw that after six years of applying, I finally drew my tag. Living in South Carolina, the opportunity to hunt the Rocky Mountain West burns in me like a wildfire. But to do this, I often plan years in advance to be prepared for when the opportunity presents. Planning your first out-of-state hunt can be overwhelming. Whether you are chasing…
